What to know

  1. Set realistic expectations

Visiting the Great Smoky Mountains offers stunning landscapes and Appalachian history. Expect varying weather, diverse trails, and potential wildlife sightings. Plan ahead for accommodations and embrace the park’s rustic charm while respecting its preservation efforts. Check the National Park Service website for current alerts in effect to be prepared.

  1. Make a backup plan

Crowds? Poor weather conditions? You can still enjoy the beauty of the Smokies! Explore The Great Smoky Mountains National Park Visitors Centers. Ask questions, learn about the park, and pick up park maps and souvenirs.

  1. Take a shuttle service

Reduce the stress of parking by enjoying a shuttle ride to the park. Schedules and routes may vary based on the time of the year. If you are looking to visit a popular destination, there are many shuttle services that offer stops at these locations.

 

Getting to the Smokies

Alternate Routes and Scenic Views

GPS and Navigation Systems may be inaccurate in the mountains causing drivers to be led in the wrong direction. Park road maps are available for FREE in park visitor centers. Ensure you reach your destination free of stress!

Townsend, TN Entrance

  • From the north: From interstate highway I-40 in Knoxville take Exit 386B to US-129 South to Alcoa/Maryville. At Maryville proceed on US-321 North/TN -73 East through Townsend. Continue straight on TN-73 into the park.
  • From the south: From interstate highway I-75 take Exit 376 to I-140 E towards Oak Ridge/Maryville. Merge onto I-140 E via Exit 376B towards Maryville. Turn onto US-129 South (Alcoa Highway) at Exit 11A and travel towards Alcoa. Turn onto TN-35 and follow it to US-321 North. Follow US-321 North/TN -73 East through Townsend. Continue straight on TN-73 into the park.

Parking Tips

  1. Ticketing and towing is in effect.
  2. Take a shuttle service or plan to go early in the morning or late afternoon to ensure a parking spot.
  3. Handicap tags do not need a parking tag.
  4. Cars must have a tag if parked in one spot for more than 15 minutes.
  5. Park It Forward Program–Parking tag sales will be contributed to protecting the park.

 

Three tag durations are available for purchase for all vehicle sizes and types:

  • Daily – $5
  • Weekly – $15
  • Annual – $40

 

Wildlife

Stay safe around wildlife by maintaining a safe distance, securing food and waste, and following guidelines. Respect their space to enjoy nature responsibly. Safe Wildlife Viewing Locations and Tips

 

Main tips:

  1. Stay 50 yards from any bear
  2. Stay far away from wild hogs
  3. Stay 25 yard from elk
