Critters and Creatures

8.16.24 | Local

With the Smokies in our backyard, the unique critters and creatures around our campground play a pivotal role in maintaining a thriving ecosystem. While they might seem like ordinary wildlife to the untrained eye, each species contributes richly to the local biodiversity. Although you may not always spot these inhabitants during your stay, it’s beneficial to know about them just in case.

Did You Know?
The Great Smoky Mountains are home to:

  • 40 bird species
  • 67 native fish species
  • 65 mammal species
  • Over 80 reptile and amphibian species
  • Approximately 1,500 black bears in the park.

Synchronous Fireflies (Photinus Carolinus)
Among the 19 species of fireflies in the Smokies, these are famed for their synchronized flashing patterns used in mating displays. The lights, ranging from yellow-green to blue or white, are the result of a bioluminescent process. Males flash in flight while females respond from a stationary position. Their mating season varies with temperature and soil moisture.

Viewing Etiquette:

  • Use flashlights minimally to avoid disrupting the fireflies.
  • Stay on trails to preserve habitats.
  • Always pick up your trash to maintain park cleanliness.

American Black Bear
A symbol of the Smokies, the American Black Bear is prevalent throughout the park. As the largest protected area for black bears in the Eastern U.S., the park houses about 1,900 bears, roughly two per square mile.

Bear Safety Tips:

  • Keep a safe distance.
  • Never approach or feed bears.
  • Secure your food and dispose of garbage properly.

Salamanders
Dubbed the “Salamander Capital of the World,” the park supports about 30 species of these fascinating lungless amphibians, which breathe through their skin. Look out for their vibrant colors and diverse species during your hikes!

Endangered Species
While the park supports an abundant array of wildlife, some species are threatened. Familiarize yourself with them to aid in their protection.
